A Widow’s Business: A Practical Guide Through the First Year After the Death of a Spouse
by: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Product rating: 5.0 with 3 reviews
A WIDOW’S BUSINESS brings order to the many things a new widow has to handle—from organizing tasks in their order of importance to gathering the information needed to dealing with finances. The book also contains a simple overview of taxes, probate, and legal documents. In addition, a handy section helps a new widow prepare instructions for her future executors, to make their tasks easier. After the death of her husband, Liz Swiertz Newman had been overwhelmed by the amount of business there was to tend to. She looked for a book to help her know what to do and when to do it. She began making to-do lists, and when she contemplated the 15 pages of lists, she realized that she had begun to write the book that she needed—that widows need. A WIDOW’S BUSINESS: A Practical Guide Through the First Year after the Death of a Spouse, resulted from the organization of her lists and the inclusion of the kind of information other widows might need. Items covered in the first chapter address what is required immediately upon the death of one’s spouse, including whom to notify. The second chapter begins with information needed and where to get help. Also discussed are composing an obituary notice and planning a memorial service. The third chapter helps a new widow get organized at home to cope with the incoming paperwork and other items. The fourth chapter addresses money—what to expect, where to apply for assistance, and how to set up accounts. The author explains that help is at hand through a widow’s team of human resources—her CPA, her trust attorney if she has one, her banker or Certified Financial Planner, and others. She gives an overview of taxes, trusts, wills, and probate. This chapter ends with a review of scams, the fraudulent schemes that attempt to cheat people out of their money. The fifth chapter outlines the rest of the tasks required of a widow, from the next most in importance to those that can wait a while. The sixth and final chapter makes recommendations as to what a widow can do to plan ahead, including a section on how to draw up instructions for a future executor and how to organize a list of bequests. The lists are connected with brief narratives about the author’s own experiences. Ideally, all couples should read A WIDOW’S BUSINESS before they ever have a need for it. Besides being indispensable to a new widow or widower, the information is good to know and good for sharing with others.

Last First Snow (Craft Sequence)
by: Tor Books
Product rating: 5.0 with 9 reviews
Last First Snow: the fourth novel set in Max Gladstone’s compellingly modern fantasy world of the Craft Sequence
Forty years after the God Wars, Dresediel Lex bears the scars of liberation-especially in the Skittersill, a poor district still bound by the fallen gods’ decaying edicts. As long as the gods’ wards last, they strangle development; when they fail, demons will be loosed upon the city. The King in Red hires Elayne Kevarian of the Craft firm Kelethres, Albrecht, and Ao to fix the wards, but the Skittersill’s people have their own ideas. A protest rises against Elayne’s work, led by Temoc, a warrior-priest turned community organizer who wants to build a peaceful future for his city, his wife, and his young son.
As Elayne drags Temoc and the King in Red to the bargaining table, old wounds reopen, old gods stir in their graves, civil blood breaks to new mutiny, and profiteers circle in the desert sky. Elayne and Temoc must fight conspiracy, dark magic, and their own demons to save the peace-or failing that, to save as many people as they can.

The Insight: First Book of Athira
by: OGD Publishing
Product rating: 4.5 with 2 reviews
It’s far too dangerous. A girl would almost have to be running for her life to travel to Athira on a rickety air-ship so early in the Spring. And for that girl to be the high-born daughter of a Guild archon, nearing her seventeenth birthday, and thus womanhood…it’s unthinkable. But Evelyn Cross is running for her life. The attacks of mental darkness that leave her raving and incoherent have grown strong in the last few weeks, and the Guild doctors’ diagnosis is firm–they intend to end her “suffering” for good. So, she is running to the isle of Athira where the Old Practitioners still wield their magic, the curious Sarpeshans see into others’ thoughts, and the mysterious Chera loom in the imagination. Here there is an abbey: the home of the Sisters of the Quiet–they will shelter her. The abbey promises peace, but as Evelyn begins to grow comfortable with new friends, and a touch of love, she quickly finds herself swept up by events surrounding a brutal plague and a sinister political plot. Can Evelyn harness her “insight” to put a stop to the sickness and those behind it? Can she come to grips with her high-born ancestry, her allegiance to the Guild, and her relationship to the Old Practitioners’ way of life? Can she discover herself amid her struggles to find love and friendship far from home? And can she do it all in a mystical world that is swiftly losing itself? Owen Gabriel Danielson’s characters are as vibrant as his magical world. Steeped in a strong mysticism, his Young Adult Fantasy is fresh and modern while staying true to the traditions of the genre. Deeply thoughtful and written in rich, immersive prose, Danielson’s debut is well worth a try.

My First Hundred Years in Show Business: A Memoir
by: The Overlook Press
Product rating: 5.0 with 2 reviews
The unabashedly funny and forthright memoir by the Tony Award winner for Grey Gardens, detailing the singular life and career of one of our most admired and acclaimed stage actors
Mary Louise Wilson became a star at age sixty with her smash one-woman play Full Gallop portraying legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland. But before and since, her life and her career―including the Tony Award for her portrayal of Big Edie in Grey Gardens―have been enviably celebrated and varied.
Raised in New Orleans with a social climbing, alcoholic mother, Mary Louise moved to New York City in the late 1950s; lived with her gay brother in the Village; entered the nightclub scene in a legendary review; and rubbed shoulders with every famous person of that era and since. My First Hundred Years in Show Business gets it all down. Yet as delicious as the anecdotes are, the heart of this book is in its unblinkingly honest depiction of the life of a working actor. In her inimitable voice―wry, admirably unsentimental, mordantly funny―Mary Louise Wilson has crafted a work that is at once a teeming social history of the New York theatre scene and a thoroughly revealing, superbly entertaining memoir of the life of an extraordinary woman and actor. 24 b&w photographs

The Dog Master: A Novel of the First Dog
by: Forge Books
Product rating: 4.9 with 11 reviews
Set against the most dramatic time in our species’ history, The Dog Master tells the story of one tribe’s struggle for survival and one extraordinary man’s bond with a wolf-a friendship that changed mankind forever
Thirty thousand years ago, ice was storming the planet. Among the species forced out of the trees and onto the steppes by the advancing cold was modern man, who was both predator and prey.
No stranger to the experiences that make us human-a mother’s love and a father’s betrayal, tribal war and increasing famine, political intrigue and forbidden love, joy and hope and devastating loss-our ancestors competed for scant resources in a brutal landscape.
Mankind stood on the cold brink of extinction…but they had a unique advantage over other species, a new technology-domesticated wolves.
Only a set of extraordinary circumstances could have transformed one of these fierce creatures into a hunting companion, a bodyguard, a soldier, and a friend. The Dog Master by W. Bruce Cameron is an evocative glimpse of prehistory, an emotional coming of age saga, a thrilling tale of survival against all odds, and the exciting, imaginative story of the first dog.
